Extracting structured data from a receipt photo — merchant name, date, subtotal, tax, total — uses pattern matching on the extracted text (looking for a dollar amount near the word “total,” for instance), not genuine understanding of what a receipt actually represents as a document.
This works reasonably well on standard, clearly-formatted receipts from typical retail transactions. It can miss or misread fields on unusual receipt layouts, handwritten receipts, or receipts with non-standard formatting that doesn’t match the common patterns this detection looks for.
Every extracted field — merchant, date, amounts — is presented as editable text specifically because it should be checked against the original receipt before you rely on it, especially for anything related to expense tracking, reimbursement, or taxes where accuracy genuinely matters.
