About Character Counter with Custom Limit

Character count matters specifically where a platform enforces a strict limit β€” a tweet, an SMS message, a meta description tag, a form field β€” situations where word count alone doesn’t tell you whether you’ll fit.

This tool counts characters both with and without spaces, since some platforms count spaces toward the limit and others don’t, giving you the number that actually matches whatever you’re checking against.

Updates in real time as you type or paste, so you can see exactly where you stand throughout writing rather than checking only once you think you’re finished.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the character counter include spaces?

Yes. The Total characters figure counts every character, including spaces and line breaks, while the No spaces figure removes all whitespace. Check both numbers if a form or platform says whether it counts spaces, since the two totals can differ a lot.

How do I check my text against a character limit?

Type or paste your text, then enter your limit in the optional limit box, for example 280. The tool shows how many characters remain, or how many you are over. It does not include presets for specific platforms, so you enter the number yourself.

Why does an emoji count as two characters?

The counter uses the browser's string length, which counts UTF-16 code units. Many emoji and some rare symbols take two units, so they add 2 to the total. Platforms that count by visible symbol may show a lower number for the same text.

Is the text I paste kept private?

The counting runs in your browser as you type, and the script does not send your text anywhere. There is nothing to sign up for. Clear removes the text from the box, and closing or refreshing the page discards it too.
